Fleuri restaurant inside the Sutton Place Hotel – 845 Burrard St
On a saturday afternoon, I went to the Fleuri restaurant inside the Sutton Place Hotel for high tea. I have been to the Fleuri restaurant before for their all-you-can-eat chocolate buffet (in my humble opinion, it was amazing), therefore I knew that I would have a good time. The inside of the hotel is beautiful. There is three comfortable sofa in front of the reception, right by the restaurant. I sat there and read my book while waiting for my friends. The hotel has this kind of old and elegant victorian feel to it. I feel like a celebrity when I walk inside the hotel. I guess that as a poor student, I am easily impressed. 🙂
We were brought to our table very quickly. There was not too many people in the restaurant, but then again, it was 2h30 in the afternoon and not too many people eat at that time of the day. We were sitting in this big room away from the main part of the restaurant because we were supposed to be a big group, but only 7 of us came. It was still fun though. The room had a big painting on the back wall and a beautiful chandelier over the table. It was very fancy (all of this for 30$ for the high-tea).
The high tea was okay. I have been to many tea places in Vancouver (Secret Garden, Faubourg, Urban Tea Merchant,…), but this one is not yet on my list of favorite. I got the Orange tea which was sweet and fruity (which is exactly how I like it). I also explained my pescatarian lifestyle to our waitress and she was very nice. She brought three trays for 5 people so we actually had a bit more food than normal.
However, I was not impressed with the sandwiches and the scone. The pescatarian sandwiches were a smoked salmon roll and the cucumber and cream cheese. I thought that the smoked salmon had too much dough and the cucumber sandwich had too much salad inside. The sandwiches were good, but I have had better I really liked the blueberry scone, but I was looking forward to the cream that comes with high tea which is usually fluffy and light. This one was a bit denser. The jam came in little pots and they were many choices so that was nice.
The pastries were delicious though. There was an orange cupcake which was light. The strawberry tart was also excellent, but it broke in my hand when I bit into it. The tray also consisted of a chocolate macaroon with chocolate cream inside which was succulent along with the chocolate dome filled with chocolate cream inside. I really enjoyed those pastries and since we had more food than usual, I got to eat two cupcakes and two macaroons. 🙂
The service was impeccable. The waitress was really nice and I appreciated the fact that she adapted the high tea to accommodate me. She was polite and efficient.
Overall, I would definitely go back to Fleuri as I really enjoyed their all-you-can-eat chocolate buffet. Even though the hotel and the restaurant are gorgeous, I don’t think I would come back for the high tea. In my humble opinion, Kerrisdale is the place to go for high tea since it’s filled with shops who specialize in this kind of food.
