Sophie’s Cosmic Cafe – 2095 West 4th Avenue
On another rainy morning in Vancouver (big surprise!), I walked towards Sophie’s Cosmic cafe to enjoy a nice brunch with a friend. I have been to this restaurant twice already once for dinner and the other for desserts and I enjoyed the food everytime. Having never tried the brunch there, I decided to make this another food adventure. I arrived at 10am and while there was a little line-up, my friend already had a table inside. If you have considered trying sophie’s cosmic cafe, you have probably heard something about the decor. In brief, it looks like the owner bought every vintage items in Vancouver and put them on the walls. Oh, and he bought a pool table and a plastic fish and put the table on the wall too with the fish on top of it. The first time I entered Sophie’s cosmic cafe, I felt like I entered a time capsule. Since some things cannot be described in words, here is a photo of the pool table:
After I was seated, the waitress took our order and brought our drinks. I got a delicious hot chocolate which felt good considering it was pouring outside. The food was served very fast. I had ordered a simple breakfast (2 eggs sunny side-ups, potatoes, and toast). Sophie’s, I love you and I shared a amazing banana split with the same friend exactly the last time I saw you, but this morning, I was a bit disappointed. The potatoes were hard and spicy. The toasts were plain and I feel like I remember something about homemade jam, but I had to eat the jam in the small container that you can find anywhere. As for the eggs, well, I could have made that myself. In my humble opinion, I was not impressed.
The waitress didn’t help either. After serving our food, she completely forgot us and didn’t check up on us. I wanted to order another hot chocolate and could not for the life of me remember what my waitress looked like (and I have an excellent memory when it comes to faces so that is how bad it was). I saw other tables with toasts that were not multigrain so the waitress clearly didn’t bother asking me what kind I prefer.
I don’t know if it’s because the place was packed and the waitresses were overwhelmed, but I am not impressed by the food or by the service. I will go back again to Sophie’s cosmic cafe but for dinner or desserts, never again for brunch. I could have made this breakfast at one for a third of the price. It’s not worth it.
